Mission Statement

About UsThe mission of Jacobs Capital is to help business owners realize the value of the investment in their companies by educating them about alternate liquidity options and executing the transaction that best meets their personal objectives with unmatched professionalism.

Values

  • To treat every client's company as if it was our own
  • To maintain an unparalleled reputation for integrity and honesty
  • To offer professionalism not available elsewhere to companies with under $100 million in revenues
  • To never take on more projects than its principle can manage personally

Company History

After managing the M&A/Business Valuation practices for one of the nation's largest banks, a global consulting firm, and the southeastern region for the country's largest valuation and middle market M&A firm, Michael Jacobs decided he would rather spend his time working exclusively with clients rather than on administrative tasks. Jacobs Capital was founded in Atlanta in 1998 and launched the first Internet-based platform to produce accredited business valuations. This allowed Jacobs Capital to focus the bulk of its time on M&A activities, yet still offer world-class business valuations at affordable prices. In 2000, Jacobs Capital opened its San Francisco office. In 2006, Jacobs Capital moved its principal office from Atlanta to Research Triangle Park, near Chapel Hill, NC, where Michael Jacobs serves on the faculty at UNC's MBA school on a part-time basis.

How are we Different?

Jacobs Capital offers business owners a unique approach that is not found in other firms serving clients of comparable size. The M&A firms targeting companies with less than $100 million in revenues generally fall into one of three categories: 1.) the well-known national firms that secure business through direct marketing and seminars. These firms have poor reputations for integrity, charge exorbitant fees for business valuations, and close less than 1 in 10 deals on which they are hired. 2.) One-man shops that lack the resources to provide a full-service approach to selling a company; and 3.) Boutique firms with experienced professionals who practice the bait-and-switch approach, where seasoned M&A advisors spend their time on marketing and are rarely seen once the client signs on.

Jacobs Capital begins our projects by assuring that our clients have realistic expectations about the value of their business. We offer the highest quality business valuation in the country for the price. We then seek to understand all of the owner's agenda, not just what price they can anticipate, by exploring the cultural, family and other factors that are important to the business owner. We educate our clients on all of the liquidity strategies that might be viable for their situation and the personal and financial ramifications of going down each path. Once we have determined the solution that best matches our clients' needs, we execute the transaction with a full team of professionals that is managed on a daily basis by the firm's principal. As a part-time academic, Michael Jacobs seeks to have fully-informed clients who trust him implicitly to manage their deal as if he was selling his own company. We often work with business owners for many years before suggesting they seek liquidity. We are not just looking to get a deal done. We are looking to get the right deal done, and we have the patience to wait until the timing and price are right for our client.
